Biography
Timeka Marshall, born February 14th, 1989 at the Wismar Hospital in Linden became a public figure after winning the first ever GT&T Cellink Plus Jingle competition. Her very first performance was at a high school pageant, held at the National Cultural Centre where she chose to sing for her talent piece. As the talent segment approached, her nerves over on overdrive but she kept her composure long enough to deliver a performance that was judged "best talent." She shared with GuyanaLive that it was a pleasurable experience to hear the crowd calling her name and applauding non-stop.
Her next move was to enter, and win, the GT&T Cellink Plus Jingle competition. She was subsequently sought out to do other advertisements and jingles, as well as to perform at various shows nationwide. Her involvement in a fashion show allowed her to explore yet another field -modelling- which she has come to enjoy very much. Timeka may be remembered for her collaboration with Kerwin Bollers and Ryan Evans on what most would refer to as a "stupid, but catchy" song a few years ago. She released her first single "We should separate" and quickly followed this with "Nothing at all." The video for her first single was shot in Jamaica and Timeka thanks all those who were involved in this process.
Since then she has recorded several songs, performed at some of Guyana's biggest shows, and worked alongside GT&T with all jingle competitions subsequent to her win. She was recently signed to Pyramid Music, a management company based in Barbados, and has a development deal with Headline Entertainment, a Jamaican company responsible for all bookings and arrangements. In her relatively short career, she has already had the privilege of performing at shows with and even meeting some of music's greats. At her most memorable performance, Smile Jamaica Africa Unite, Timeka was able to perform with artistes she's always looked up to. Timeka has also written and recorded for some very popular and influential producers in Jamaica, namely Don Carleone, Clive Hunt, Dean Mundy and Dylenqunet Minds, Bulby, Davante, Equiknoxx, Stephen Magregor and Jeremy Harding.
Timeka told GuyanaLive that her inspiration, the person who pushed her to take singing seriously, was her current manager Kerwin Bollers. She credits her success thus far to Bollers and a few other persons, including Dwidth Ferguson and the entire Hits and Jams team. She's also names persons like former Marketing Director of GT&T Mr. Michael George, Renetha Exeter, and the Marketing team which includes persons like Priscilla and Alan Fernandes, Santia Bradshaw from Pyramid Music, and Jerome Hamilton and Carlette De Leon from Headline Entertainment.
On a more personal note, Timeka enjoys travelling, meeting new people, shopping, clubbing modelling, playing video games and just "hanging out." It was a bit of a shocker to learn that the pretty young woman we see on the television was a tomboy. As a child she enjoyed riding, either alone or with her many cousins. She shared a story of one of her many near death bike rides which included her, and two busses headed in opposite directions on a narrow roadway down a hill. That night, she told GuyanaLive, she was sent to bed very early after one of the bus drivers turned up at her grandmother's house and "complained on her." You know how it is in Guyana.
Timeka has moved quite a lot, and has called places like One Mile Wismar, Silvertown, Agricola and Bagotstown "home." In her pre-adolescent years she regarded her mother as her role model. Her focus then switched to her fun-loving aunt and finally she dropped all role models and simply focused her attention on her friends who were at the centre of her world.
Though she enjoys just about every music genre, Timeka has a special love for dancehall and pop fusions and she enjoys a hearty plate of cook-up rice, and any pasta dish. She revealed that her favourite song has not yet been released and said that the feelings and mental images evoked while singing make this song all the more enjoyable for her.
Over the years she's learnt the importance of pre-performance preparations. She now takes time to "warm up [her] vocals and get into the zone;" she is often very anti social just before a performance. She tries to pray before each performance, but admitted that sometimes she forgets. Fortunately, though, she has noticed the difference a prayer makes. Though she doesn't live by any motto, per se, she believes that nothing comes easily but that if it does then something "shady" must be going on.
Timeka believes that local music and the support it gets have come a long way, but that there are steps which we can take in order to raise the standard and thus the love of our own Guyanese music even more. Without giving any specifics she encourages fans to be on the lookout for great things from her, including some very promising collaborations.
In closing, for those intending to begin a music career Timeka advises as follows:
"Don't do it if you don't have the love for it...if there is no love then you're just wasting your time and that of others. If you do decided to [follow through], keep in mind that it's no easy road. There are going to be a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of times you will need to fake a smile. Also, realise from early that not everyone will fall in love with you...pleasing everyone is not something you should even attempt...just be true to yourself and to the music."
