Biography
Jumo Primo, who has been accurately dubbed "Rubber Waist," was born in Plaisance on August 26th, 1976 and pursued his primary and secondary education in Georgetown. He is the eldest of ten children, the youngest of whom is nineteen years old, and has a daughter of his own who he said is "a little rubber waist."
It was in his young, formative years that Jumo developed a passion for singing. This, he said, helped to make his childhood a "fun" period. As a child, his role models were "Brother Forde," a member of his church, and Machel Montano. Though this seems a rather strange combination, Jumo said that they shared a common trait: "the vibes and energy they brought to whatever they did."
In addition to performing Jumo enjoys riding, playing football and "hanging out" with his friends and family. Put a plate of "dhal and rice" or any kind of curry in front of Jumo and he's a happy camper; give him a glass of cherry and carrot juice to wash that down and he is set for the day. This juice blend, he said, gives him the vitamins he needs to perform for hours.
At age fourteen Jumo was "singing on set," played the role of DJ, and also made dubplates for various sound systems. Where concert performances are concerned, he began singing with the "Mischievous Guys" band, but noted that it was his work with "Jerusalem" that really propelled his career. He then went on to perform with "Byron Lee and the Dragonaires." His first stage performance was at "Academic Freedom" at the University of Guyana. He was very nervous and weak in the knees as he was not sure what he should expect, but he did not disappoint the "massive crowd" that was gathered. Instead, he delivered an energetic performance that gave no indications of his nervousness.
Jumo has noted two memorable moments in his career. The first went something like this:
I was in the Bahamas performing and a lady about six feet tall snatched me from the stage and was heading through the door. The security guards were standing right next to me and she told him 'y'all can't get he, he goin' home wit' me tonight.'
The second memory he shared was when he was in an accident and had to be hospitalized around the time X2 was to perform for the "school show." He was sad about this because "X2 gets a lot of support from the kids." He recalls that while in hospital two young ladies approached him and asked him what would happen to the show. When he told them that it would still be on and that Adrian and the other performers would hold the fort, they kept insisting that it just wouldn't have been the same without him. Since the doctors didn't approve of his being involved in the show, he had his brothers drive him to the show. No one knew he was there, but when he finally took the stage the warmth with which he was welcome brought tears to his eyes.
Jumo had been on tours to many places, the last being China which he has described as being "like another universe." He spent three weeks there and said that though the people did not understand what he was singing they understood his actions. Jumo said that in choosing songs for a show, he takes into consideration the type of audience as well as the variety of songs they are likely to know. Exercise to "loosen up" and a prayer for guidance precede each performance.
GuyanaLive learnt that Jumo and Adrian Dutchin usually write the X2 lyrics individually, and then put them together to produce what we hear. Jumo also revealed that there are albums which he worked on, but never released because of the formation of X2. Jumo's favourite solo tracks are "Thanks" and "Danger," and his favourite X2 song is the one that "started it all: 'Crazy'."
Jumo works out of Kross Kolor Records and is managed by Mr. Burchmore Simon. He met Mr. Simon while singing with the band "E.C. Connection," and has been under his management for the last eight years - the first four were as a solo artiste, and the other four as a member of X2.
Jumo met Adrian at Kross Kolor Records, but at the time Adrian was with "Seven," Jumo was touring with "Jerusalem." He vividly recalled the day they first worked together:
I was in the studio recording a song and he was coming in, and his manager came up with this idea of us doing a song together. So the other guy that did the tracks for us started playing the rhythm for "Crazy." Adrian started singing, I started vibing, and in a matter of minutes the hit song "Crazy" was made.
Jumo shared with GuyanaLive that the saddest moment in his music career occurred when his grandmother died. Because he did not spend much time with his parents, her death was accompanied by feelings that "everything was taken" from him. When asked whether she was his inspiration in choosing this profession, he revealed that he comes from a musically inclined family; his great grand father was a pianist, and his great grand mother was a music teacher. It all just came naturally. He praises God for the talent He's blessed him with, and for guiding and protecting him each day. He also thanks his family, friends and his many fans for all the support they've shown through the years.
Jumo hopes to eventually have his own studio since music is everything to him. He encourages all who're interested in beginning a music career to remain focused. He urges them to keep in mind that it's not about getting material things, but about the music. "It's not an easy road," but many have travelled on it before and there is nothing that can stop anyone else, with true passion and drive, from doing the same.
