Biography
Relatively new to most is twenty-four year old Jermaine Braithwaite. He was born on September 21 at the Georgetown Public Hospital, spent his childhood here in Guyana and his early adult life in the United States of America. His sheer love for music is what got his music career on a roll in 2000 when he began recording at Kross Kolor Studio. He subsequently appeared on Talent Exclusive, compliments of Mr. Ian Johnson, and it was then that he realized that a bright future lay before Guyana's music industry. Mr. Johnson afforded him the opportunity to record with Dynamix Studio which led to several performances and new releases. Jermaine writes his own songs and has highlighted "Over and Over" as his favourtie. His current manager and producer is Mr. Ian Johnson who he has been with ever since 1998 when they met at the Dynamix Studio. His most recent performance was in Nabacalis where he received an overwhelming response from the crowd. Jermaine's first performance was at the Square of the Revolution where he, along with other talented Guyanese artistes, wowed the audience. He noted that his most memorable performance was the third production of "Watz Hot Guyana." This show meant a lot to him because he dedicated the evening's performance to all the young persons, including his cousin Gillford Henry, who had died innocently.
As a child Jermaine enjoyed being in the company of "older folks" like his grandfather and his friends. While he also enjoyed swimming and "bush cooking" with his friends, he noted that his most memorable experience as a child was his involvement in Mass Games at the National Park. What stood out for him was the accuracy, with respect to timing, with which all the activities were executed. When he is not singing, Jermaine can be found writing and listening to music, or cooking up a storm in his kitchen. He enjoys rap music and a good plate of some fish dish and, on a more serious note, has always admired the late L.F.S. Burnham because of his belief in and hard work toward the realization of Guyana's independence.
Jermaine agrees that he gets a lot of support locally, but is unsure of the size of his fan base. He encourages aspiring musicians to "freestyle everyday, listen to a lot of music and be very observant and aware of what's happening around" them. In preparing for each performance he stated that it is important, in addition to rehearsing, to keep a positive frame of mind and to make God the centre of one's life.
When asked who he credits for his being who he is today Jermaine shared the following with GuyanaLive:
"Utmost credit to Jesus Christ for everything I am today; lots of appreciation to my mother who taught me good values, my wife for always supporting me and Mr. Ian Johnson who gave me [the] opportunity I always dreamt of."
Jermaine encourages his fans to continue to expect nothing but good, wholesome and positive music from him; he has a lot in store for you all.
