Biography
Adrian Dutchin first appeared on the scene in the 1990's as part of the group "Seven." He was born in Georgetown, Guyana on September 4th, 1981 and has called several areas - Kitty, Lodge, North East and Alberttown - home. Though he said that he never had any role models as a child, he did mention that he enjoyed listening to some of the legends like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. He also loved to sit and listen to the "older folks" tell stories, spending time with his cousins and looking at their favourite show in the afternoon - "The Mickey Mouse Club." He loves being in the studio, working with music in some way or the other, and also takes pleasure in acting. Basically he's up for any form of entertainment.
Adrian's favourite food is curried chicken; he is fond of dark colours, especially blue; and his is very open minded in his taste for music as he is interested in how a person is able to accomplish what they do.
Adrian had his first on-stage experience while at Nursery School. Barely able to control his laughter, he shared the following with GuyanaLive: "the guys forgot their parts and I used to look at them practice so I ran on stage and did their part." Adrian Dutchin, the star, was born.
Adrian is eternally grateful to God - his light through the darkness - as without Him none of these successes would have been possible. When asked to comment on the inspiration behind his career choice he acknowledged his producer Donna Short Gill. He went on to say that he believes that he was, in fact, his biggest source of inspiration and motivation. He believes that it all starts within an individual. A million persons can tell you how good your are and how much they believe in you, but if you never actually believe in yourself, you will never tap into your true potential.
Adrian has thus far lived by one of the various mottos he keeps in mind each day - "never give up." Following the split of the group "Seven" Adrian continued to work on his music and eventually came out on top in several competitions - the Road March, twice, and once with Chris Wilson for the song "Buxton Spice." He also made a name for himself in the Soca Monarch competition, gaining third place at his first attempt and first place two consecutive times after that. Laughing, he recalled his fourth place at this year's competition.
After winning the Road March in 2006 he was drafted with "X2." He and Jumo recorded with Kross Kolor Records and he was subsequently drafted with Krosfyah. Adrian sees all this as his opportunity to work hard to "keep the flag flying."
GuyanaLive learnt that Adrian has written the majority of the solo songs, while the hits for X2 were written by himself and Jumo. "Push It Back" was written by X2's manager, Burchmore Simon. He could not identify a "favourite track" as there is a piece of him in each song he does; each is "dear" to him in some way or the other. Adrian met Kross Kolor's CEO, Burchmore Simon at his studio while working on the television programme "Chill," and has been under his management for the last five years.
Adrian has a pretty unpredictable and near nonexistent tour "schedule" since, as he puts it, "things come on and off so fast you can't plan your personal things to do." He has graced the shores of several countries, including the USA, Turks and Caicos, Antigua, Barbados, England, Canada, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and St. Croix. He has performed with "all the soca big boys" like Rupee, Machel Montano, Alison Hinds, Destra, Edwin Yearwood, Sherwin Winchester, and Iwer George. The last tour took X2 to the beautiful Turks and Caicos. This show, Adrian said, was sold out and received an overwhelming response. Everyone loved them and once they hit the stage, the audience went crazy.
Though many artistes are unable to identify a single, most memorable performance, Adrian didn't have to think twice about his. This is what he shared with GuyanaLive: "I did a lot of shows, but nothing comes close to the day I was on the road on top of a truck in Barbados representing for my country. I saw people crying, jumping, taking pictures and showing friends and family me, being a Guyanese, up there. Singing brought tears to my eyes, to know I was just a little school boy with a dream and the love for an art form, and now I have people loving what I do."
Adrian explained that the choice of songs for any given performance is made by the band. He also revealed that before going on stage, he always prays for God to keep him calm throughout his performance.
When asked to comment on his fan base, Adrian, laughing, said that that's an issue he's not very sure about. He did, however, mention that, strangely enough, people from places like Nigeria and Angola show a great appreciation for his music. Adrian is extremely grateful for the support he gets locally, and also believes that every Guyanese artiste today is doing well and being very well supported. He is very proud.
When asked whether he is currently working on anything new, Adrian responded with: "I always have things in the making. Right now my focus is on X2 and my album that will be out soon. It's called "My Kinda Vibes." The title is self explanatory; it's basically my kind of vibes when I'm in the studio. I just flow, do what I feel like, give people me, at my realest."
Adrian advises anyone interested in beginning a music career to keep at it. He said that if you have already given up in your mind, then you have, in actuality, given up on your whole venture. It isn't easy of any artiste, but if it really means that much to you, you will keep working until you reach your destination. He urges potential stars to "pray and believe."
Ultimately, Adrian Dutchin wants to leave a legacy behind. He wants for his daughter to be afforded opportunities he didn't have as a child. He wants to play a vital role in paving a positive path for Guyana's youth. He believes that each of us can leave a positive legacy for the future generations if we would only live up to our mottos as "One People, One Nation, One Destiny."
