The final day of group action in the Fifa Under-17 Women's World Cup T&T 2010, sees a finely balanced Group D with all four teams, Brazil, Canada, Republic of Ireland and Ghana, on three points after two matches. A win for any of the quartet will guarantee a place in the next round Brazil will meet Canada at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, while Republic of Ireland and Ghana will fight for the other spot at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Tobago. Both matches start at 7 pm.
The Brazilians arrived in T&T as heavy favourites, finishing top in the South American qualifying campaign with an astounding 40 goals to their name while Canada knocked out the fancied USA, runners-up in the inaugural tournament in New Zealand, two years ago. After a hard fought 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland in its group opener, Brazil, led by the impressive Glaucia, slipped up in their second match and were defeated 1-0 by Ghana in a less than inspired performance. The Canadians too, were edged 1-0 by the Irish last time out after beating Ghana 1-0 and need nothing less than a win to advance as they trail Brazil and Republic of Ireland on goal-difference.
In Group C, Spain are in good shape to book their place in the last eight, but are still not technically qualified on six points from their first two matches. A draw against Venezuela at Marabella in their 4 pm meeting would be enough to see them through to the knockout rounds while the South Americans must win to have any chance of qualifying. The other match in Group C, which will be played simultaneously at Bacolet, sees winless New Zealand taking on Japan. The Japanese need a victory to qualify for the quarterfinal round and based on their last performance should have no trouble against the Lady Ferns, who will be playing for pride.
