Feel the Beat : Caribbean Spice

Feel the Beat Group 1

It's 'Caribbean' week on Feel the Beat and the twenty-six dancers who advanced last week were challenged to interpret various genres of Caribbean music.
On Tuesday night the Theatre Guild was filled to capacity with excited spectators, dancers and choreographers.

Feel the Beat Beat Group 2

One 'Kata' dancer left both the judges and audience amazed when he practically 'jumped' out of his comfort zone and displayed an amazing performance to Lil Rick's 'Jones and Wuk Up'. The audience saw an astounding interpretation of Bob Marley's redemption song while another group definitely 'gave everyone something to talk about as they danced to Charmaine Blackman's 'Gi dem mo fi talk'. It was a true display of cultural diversity.

Hikers Junior Tournament March 24th – 25th : Team Notes

Hikers Hockey Team Logo

GCC Hockey Club
The GCC Hockey Club is one of the premier hockey clubs in Guyana. It was formed in the seventies by the men from Saints Stanislaus Hockey Club at the time and has grown into club competing regularly at local and regional tournaments with much success in the men and ladies sections. GCC has an active junior coaching programme which extends to some schools as well. They are definitely a club to beat in this tournament.

Hikers Hockey Club Hikers
Hockey Club was formed in the early nineties and has evolved into one of the main hockey clubs in Guyana today. Along with its Men and Women Sections Hikers have an ongoing junior programme that practices regularly and also a schools programme. Hikers Junior Section will be fielding at least two teams per category for this tournament.

Marian Academy
Marian Academy is a Catholic school established in 1998. Its hockey programme started three years ago and GCC Hockey Club currently runs the programme with a team of coaches led by Sonia Jardim. The current programme consists of 20 boys and 4 girls. The school will be fielding at least one team per category for the tournament.

North Ruimveldt
Multilateral Hockey at North Ruimveldt Multilateral High School has been an ongoing relationship with Old Fort Hockey Club for a few decades. Old Fort has over the years coached students from North Ruimveldt Multilateral and they in turn have played for Old Fort. The School will be fielding at least two teams per category for the tournament.

Old Fort Hockey Club
Old Fort hockey Club was started in the late seventies and fielded players from South Ruimveldt areas. The club is renowned for playing a skillful up-tempo brand of hockey. As part of an ongoing programme the club also coaches students at the North Ruimveldt Multilateral where many of players of the club went to school. The club will be fielding at least one team per category for the tournament.

Queens College
Queens College was established in 1844 and field hockey has been played intermittently over the years. There has been a resurgence of field hockey in the school recently and due, in part, to the number of sixth formers who have graduated from the hockey programmes at their former schools, Marian Academy and St. Stanislaus College. After placing third at last year’s tournament, Queens will be looking to exact revenge as they field an extremely strong team this year.

School of the Nations
School of the Nations is a private school and is relatively new to the hockey arena. Surprising champions of last year’s schools category, School of the Nations will be relying on a fresh crop of player this time around. The Hikers Hockey Club conducts after school classes at the school on Friday afternoons on the guidance of senior player Shane Samuels. This will be a learning experience for most of these youngsters as they compete for the first time.

St. Stanislaus College
Hockey at Saints was first introduced in 1973 by former national captain Chris Fernandes and was very successful in the early years. They even managed to play unbeaten on a school tour of Trinidad and Barbados in 1978. After an absence of several years hockey was reintroduced to Saints by former student Marc King. The Hikers Hockey Club now runs an afterschool junior programme three times per week at the school, under the guidance of junior coach Renee James. Past and present students of the school recently formed a new hockey club that is already competing in the second division outdoor league. This will be the first junior tournament played by the newly formed club!

Epic battle of the Groups this week on Feel the Beat!

Feel The Beat Logo

Most of us saw it and others heard about it, but one thing is for sure; Guyana is definitely feeling the beat! This week the reality dance show will take the action to an even higher level. The top fifty contestants who were selected last week were put into ten groups of five and tasked with choreographing and presenting a ninety-second dance for the judges. Well, this article would not allow us to explain all that happened that night, but we can summarize it with one word- epic!
Fists were pumping, waistlines rolled and bodies gyrated manically to some of the hottest hits! The fact that each dancer contributed some choreography to the final product clearly showed that Guyana really has talent! Unfortunately, the journey ended abruptly for twenty four dancers. Tears streamed down disappointed faces and rejection even sparked anger in some who expressed it backstage. Nevertheless, the show was amazing.
Tune in to GTT’s ‘Fee HJTV Ch. 72, NCN Ch. 11 and MTV Ch. 65 this Sunday for one hour of heart-racing excitement! The show will also be aired on TVG Ch. 28 on Monday night at 9pm.

Malika Henry wins Toyota Porte Car from Hits and Jams Entertainment

Malika Henry recieves keys to her new car from C.E.O Rawle Ferguson

"At first I thought it was a prank and nearly disconnected the call. Thank God I didn't". These were the words of 23 year old Buxtonian Malika Henry who was all smiles at the HJ studio last Wednesday when she received the keys to her new Toyota Porte car.
Malika was among hundreds who attended the Hits and Jams Mash Camp events and filled out coupons with hopes of winning the coveted motor vehicle. Henry said that she still couldn't believe it even when the keys were placed in her hands. "I went to three of the Mash Camp parties, but only filled out one coupon. I really didn't think this would happen", said Henry when asked if she thought that she would win.

The car that Malika won was initially the top prize at the recently held Fandemonium fan-appreciation day; however since no one claimed the prize, the HJ team decided to reward one lucky person who attended the Mash Camp events. Henry is just one of the hundreds who have won great prizes for simply attending Hits and Jams events this year. Timothy Griffith of Sophia walked away with a 51 inch television while others won Blackberries, laptops, Apple Ipads and many more items at Fandemonium 2012.

Those who supported HJ events, but were not as fortunate as Malika and other winners, can look forward to many more promotions of this nature throughout the year.

Introducing: Guyanese Rap/Hip Hop King NEB

Delwin Hugh Neblett aka NEB

Standing at a tall six feet, seven inches, rapper sensation NEB is not your average rapper. Born Delwin Hugh Neblett on 5th October, 1989, the third of four children to Deryck and Lerline Neblett. Even as a child, NEB was always the epitome of energy and creativity, and developed a genuinely passionate interest in music and sport at a very young age. Even at the tender Nursery level, NEB was already reciting poems and mnemonics before friends and family, at Graduation Ceremonies and other school events.

While attending St. Gabriel's Primary School, NEB immediately began to excel in both areas of sport and music. His athletic ability gained him multiple selections for the "National School's Championships" and he was also a member of the school's choir and steel orchestra. It should also be noted, that even though being involved in several extra-curricular activities he still managed to maintain above average performances in his academic studies.

While attending high school at Marian Academy, NEB's musical talent began to clearly outshine his interest in sports, and music then became is number one priority. Recognizing the talent at hand, the Music teachers quickly recommended NEB as one of few specially selected candidates to sit external exams through Britain's "Royal School of Music" and they were certainly not surprised when he managed to gain passes of distinction and merit in grades 1-3 recorder practical and theory. NEB became a master at playing the recorder, and his performances at his grading exams gained him selection to display his talent at the "Young Musicians on Stage" concert, which happens to be one of, if not the most prestigious concert held annually in honor of upcoming Guyanese musicians.

In 2006, NEB went on to be one of the first students in the history of Marian Academy to write Music at the CSEC General Proficiency level (theory and practical), however, apart from being successful in this discipline, the young prodigy excelled in all other subject areas at these exams, and graduated with the overall "Best CSEC Results" for Marian Academy that year, with passes in ten (10) other subject areas. (This was also the first year that any student at that school attempted eleven (11) or more subjects at one sitting).

After Graduating from High School, NEB then went onto Queen's College to pursue his 6th form studies in areas of Law and Literature, but music always seemed to be ever present at the apex of his focus.

Since then, NEB has committed himself to working towards achieving his dreams as a successful musician. Now 22, he aspires to be the first home grown Guyanese rapper/producer to make it on the international scene. He's currently employed at the Bank of Nova Scotia, but dedicates most of his free time towards his music. When asked what his advice to other aspiring artistes would be, NEB responded by saying "Music is Life, and once you have the passion to live it in everything that you do, success is all but inevitable".

Become a fan of NEB now. Add him on facebook (NEB), subscribe to his youtube page "NEB592" or follow him on twitter @NEB592 and watch this star from our shores on his journey to the top, putting Guyana on the Rap Hip Hop map in a major way.

Flame Restaurant

Flame Restaurant

Recently opened, Flame Restaurant situated at the Tower Hotel was my Friday night pick for Girls Night. I’ve heard about it, I’ve seen pictures but nothing compares to firsthand experience.  So my friend and I got dressed up and went to dinner at Flame. J

The restaurant is located at the back; turn left and up the stairs. This is where the splendor begins. Beautifully decorated and surely inviting the stairs lead you to what you’ll find to be one of the best restaurants in Guyana.

We were greeted by a dashing young man who asked us if we had a reservation. Of course we didn’t! He then called who I suppose was the Maitre d' for the night; another elegantly dressed young man who directed us to our seats, officially welcomed us to Flame and gave us the name of our waitress for the night.

The décor is absolutely dazzling. For a quick second I thought that I was on a hot date with Mr. GQ at one of the fancy restaurants in Paris. My imagination is crazy! There is a bar positioned in one corner; two private rooms and the rest of the room is filled with tables for dining and making intimate memories. The ambience is amazing and the dimly lit lights provided an aura of serenity.

Our lovely waitress came and introduced herself and asked if we were ok. We were, although it took us a while to catch our breath, we were good! The second gentleman we met came and took our drink order. We had cosmopolitans; there are a wide array of cocktails and wines to choose from.

After surveying our menus for a few minutes which seemed like forever because we just didn’t know what to choose; I decided on the Thai Red Curry with Chicken and my friend chose from the beef dishes the Hearty Pot Roast. Whilst waiting and chatting, we were startled by our waitress who came with hot towels on a platter. I was a bit taken aback because I’ve never had hot towels on a platter before. Luckily, they weren’t our appetizers just our sanitizers. I especially loved this part of my evening. I was very impressed.

The food came and we enjoyed it. The chef even came out to see how we were doing and if we were enjoying our meal. Not sure if he does that regularly or if he just came to chat with two beautiful young ladies. J

I can honestly say that Flame is the recipient of  five stars . It’s not only the dining experience that makes a restaurant great but it’s also superb service, the sophistication of the décor and the memories you’re able to make that definitely makes a fancy restaurant FANCY!!!!

Luxury dining at its best; try it you wouldn’t be disappointed!!!!!!!

Just some things to note – the Restaurant closes at 12 (midnight) and it is also suggested that you call and make a reservation beforehand.

Feel the Beat premieres this Sunday on HJTV and NCN!

Feel The Beat

After three days of grueling auditions, Guyana’s first dance reality show is ready to go live!
Over three hundred strong turned up at the Theatre Guild last week to face the judges and show Guyana what they had to offer. The only thing they were asked to do was dance and dance they did. The judges saw the crème de la crème of contemporary dancers and the coolest hip-hop moves. Dancehall, Bollywood and Pop dance styles were well represented. The judges even witnessed the dramatic debut of the self-proclaimed ‘Guyanese Shakira’, a rubber-like waist belly dancer. The personalities were colorful and the dancing was amazing. Whoever said ‘Guyana has talent’ was definitely right!

Contestant performing

On the other hand, it wasn’t all fun throughout the entire audition process. Tears were shed and dreams were shattered. Only fifty persons made into the competition while the rest were given encouraging words from the judges who urged them to continue practicing and try again next year.

The one hour premiere will be aired on Sunday exclusively on HJTV Ch. 72, NCN, MTV Ch. 65 and TVG Ch. 28 at 9pm.
This is the first production of its kind for the entertainment giant, Hits and Jams and moreover the first national dance competition/reality show ever held in Guyana. Over the next few weeks, dancers will face difficult challenges that will test their ability to shine under pressure and versatility. Dancers will be cut every week until the very best remain. The winner of Feel the Beat will walk away with one million dollars cash while second and third place will pocket five hundred and two-hundred and fifty thousand respectively.
