Corriverton, located on the western bank and at the mouth of the Corentyne River, formerly comprised three village districts. The town was established only in 1970. It has an area of 126 squared kilometres and a population of about 17,000. There is a small port to accommodate passengers to the neighbouring state of Suriname.
Corriverton,consists of two towns, Springlands and Skeldon, which have been amalgamated.
It contains a church, and zebus are allowed to wonder freely around the town as in India. The town is also used for smuggling. Hotels in the town include the Bar Barck Hotel, Mahogany Hotel and the Swiss Guest House.
Skeldon High School
Skeldon High school, formerly ,Upper Corentyne High School was started on January 1945 with 23 students under Hajji Ramjohns bottom house at Springlands. The School was started so as to meet the needs of the Skeldon Area but because of the need for quality secondary education, its boundaries extended along the coast.
The Lutheran Church took over the school and brought it to the Lutheran Church Compound in 1947. There it was given the name Skeldon Lutheran School".
