Linden, located on the Demerara River about 107 km from Georgetown, was created a town only in 1970 and incorporates the mining town of Mackenzie, and two former village districts, Wismar and Christianburg. The area of the town is approximately 142 kmē with an estimated population of 29,000.
Linden is the second-largest city in Guyana, and capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region. It was declared a town in 1970, and includes the communities of MacKenzie and Wismar. It lies on the Demerara River and has a population of roughly 60,000. It is primarily a bauxite mining town, containing a mine 60-90 metres deep, with many other pits now in disuse.
Linden is the largest urbanity without a university within the country, if one considers the University in Turkeyen in Greater Georgetown as outside Georgetown.
The mining company runs a colonial-era guest house, with other hotels including the Summit Hotel and Hotel Star.
